Time to stand up and be counted

As protests by different segments of our workers increase in these terrible times for budgets and unions, it is becoming more important than ever to look for opportunities to show solidarity not only with other teachers but also with all workers – union and aspiring-to-be-union, public and private – as well as the powerless in our society, who are getting the brunt of the budget cuts.  No one expects everyone to turn out for all protests, but we can all show solidarity by finding at least one or two to which to lend our bodies and our voices.  Here is a list of some upcoming events:

Wednesday, April 20
Press conference at Mission Campus, City College (at the corner  of Bartlett and 22nd Street) from noon to 12:30 pm to call for support of the May 1 rally for immigrant and workers' rights and to oppose budget cuts, teacher and staff layoffs, and fee hikes at all levels.

Monday, April 25
Protest rally by International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) at the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA), 555 Market St, from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm against the lawsuit by the PMA against ILWU members for standing in solidarity with workers in Wisconsin on April 4 by shutting down teh Port of Oakland for 24 hours.
