From AFT National

The 2012 AFT convention in Detroit, which attracted more than 3,000 delegates from across the country, wrapped up earlier this week. I wanted to share a few exciting highlights from the convention and tell you about the new AFT mobile app, which launched last week.

Delegates voted resoundingly to re-elect AFT president Randi Weingarten to a third term, and elected Lorretta Johnson as secretary-treasurer and Francine Lawrence as executive vice president.

In her convention keynote address, Weingarten outlined “solution-driven unionism,” a new vision of unionism that is creative and innovative, is relevant to the 21st century, and advances solutions that unite union members, the people they serve and the communities in which they live.

This vision is reflected in the AFT’s new mission statement, also adopted at the convention:

“The American Federation of Teachers is a union of professionals that champions fairness; democracy; economic opportunity; and high-quality public education, healthcare and public services for our students, their families and our communities. We are committed to advancing these principles through community engagement, organizing, collective bargaining and political activism, and especially through the work our members do.”

The convention also highlighted key AFT priorities and programs, including Share My Lesson, the union’s partnership with First Book, the latest round of grants by the AFT Innovation Fund, and Reconnecting McDowell.

Featured speakers at this year’s convention included Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden, historian of education at New York University and best-selling author Diane Ravitch, New York Times columnist Charles Blow and United Auto Workers president Bob King.

More details, including videos, news stories and daily summaries, are available on the AFT convention website.

If you missed the convention, or want to keep up with what the AFT is doing year-round, there’s an app for that! Download the AFT’s new mobile app, launched at this year’s convention, onto your smartphone to get the latest news, stay up to date and take action on current campaigns, find your local, interact with the national union and president Weingarten on Twitter, and share photos. Download this exciting new tool from the iTunes store or Android Marketplace, and keep in touch!

In unity,
