STOP FURTHER FUNDING CUTS TO CUNY COMMUNITY COLLEGES
In June 2010, the New York City Council provided $21.4 million in additional funding to support CUNY community colleges.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg now proposes to cut CUNY’s community college budget by 5.4% before the end of the current fiscal year–that is in the next semester–to the detriment of current and future community college students.
Enrollment increased 43% over the last ten years at CUNY’s six open-access community colleges and surged dramatically with the economic downturn as many working adults returned to school to learn additional skills or complete their education.
Public funding from New York State to CUNY community colleges fell this year by $285 per FTE student, or $485 in total since 2009.
Of the 89,000 full and part-time students currently enrolled at CUNY community colleges, 81% are students of color, 49% are the first generation of their families to attend college, 46% are immigrants and 45% come from households with annual income less than $20,000.
Any additional cuts to CUNY community colleges will seriously degrade the core educational work of already overworked, under-resourced campuses, faculty and staff; students will suffer from resources stretched thin and those closed out of classes will be offered late-night course offerings that erode learning conditions; and CUNY will continue to abuse underpaid adjunct faculty, who are hired and fired at the last minute.
WE, THE UNDERSIGNED STUDENTS, STAFF, FACULTY, AND FRIENDS OF CUNY, CALL ON SPEAKER CHRISTINE QUINN AND THE MEMBERS OF THE NEW YORK CITY COUNCIL TO REJECT THE MAYOR’S PROPOSED MID-YEAR BUDGET CUT OF 5.4% TO CUNY’S COMMUNITY COLLEGES AND PRESERVE CUNY’S ABILITY TO SERVE ITS STUDENTS.
